FAÍSCAEMCHAMA (Spark in Flame)

This photojournalistic documentary essay tells us the story of a popular demonstration organized nationally by the UNE (National Union of Students) against the attacks on education coming from the Brazilian government that presided in 2022. Students and workers joined in a wave of protests across Brazil, fighting against the cruelty that prevailed.

Brazil spent four years surviving an extreme right-wing, dictatorial government that denied health, food, and education to the people, often threatening democracy. The popular struggle was very present in this devastating period of the country’s history.

The photos were taken in the city of Florianópolis, state of Santa Catarina (SC). This is quite symbolic, as Florianópolis is the most conservative and reactionary state in the country (Brasil). The event refers to a protest against the government of the time and the state of Santa Catarina was where there was the highest percentage of support.
